Soldiers Homes

In 1991 it was decided that ONE should build a Soldier's Home in Dublin to provide affordable shelter for disadvantaged ex-service personnel. Dublin was chosen because it had by far the largest number of such personnel in the country. Not alone was the problem disadvantaged ex-service personnel but it was found that there were people who had lived all their adult lives in the institutional environment of a Military Barracks and on discharge at sixty years of age they had neither family or a home in which to spend their retirement. Plans were drawn up for a three-storey building providing 20 bedrooms. The home would also have cooking, dining, recreational, laundry facilities, and a lift system. A site was purchased at 17/20 Queen St., Dublin and the onerous task of raising funds was undertaken.

Work commenced on the project in 1993 and construction work was completed in 1994 at a cost of IR£890,000. The outfitting was immediately tackled and in September 1994 and the home, named  Brú na bhFiann', was officially opened by Mary Robinson, President of Ireland and Patron of Óglaigh Náisiúnta Na hÉireann Teoranta. The cost of the project resulted in a crippling mortgage for the organisation and thankfully the final payment on that mortgage has now been paid. This great achievement was due to the hard working and dedicated members of ONE, especially the fund-raising committee who were instrumental in achieving a significant input from voluntary monthly subscriptions of both serving members and pensioners of the Defence Forces. To date Brú na bhFiann has catered for more than 450 Ex-Service personnel on a long and short term basis and ONE are justifiably proud of their achievements to date.

Further Soldiers' Homes at Beechwood House, Letterkennyand Custume House, Athlone have brought about fantastic improvements to the lives of ex-servicemen and women in other areas of Ireland.

The Dublin residence, Brú na bhFiann , was in an area being developed as part of the Smithfield/Queen Street Development and an agreement was made with the developers that a new larger and much improved Brú na bhFiann was built on North King Street Dublin as part of that development.

The new five-storey, forty roomed, Brú na bhFiann was opened by President Mary McAleese in 2003.
