The Minister for Defence, Willie O’ Dea,T.D. today (1st July) launched The Organisation of National Ex-Servicemen and Women (ONE) national fundraising event, Fuchsia, designed to assist former soldiers who have fallen on hard times.  Emblems will be sold in the week of the 12th July at venues all around the country – and contributions can also be made through the ONE website on www.oneconnect.ie. The Officer Commanding the Air Corps, Brig-Gen Ralph James attended the launch.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Willie O’ Dea said, “I was honoured to have been asked to launch the FUCHSIA campaign by ONE. I commend the campaign and urge all to support it by participation or contribution.  I want to thank everyone that has been involved in the Organization over its many years, which has made a very tangible difference to the lives of our ex-service men and women who have had cause to avail of its services. In addition to a comfortable bed and three good meals a day ONE provides a welcoming environment of comradeship and shared experiences.  Residents are assured of dignity and respect.  I am confident that in an ever changing environment we shall witness the further development of the inspirational work undertaken by the Organization in responding in a positive, and in many cases, life changing manner to the needs of our ex-service men and women.”

Lt-Gen Gerry McMahon, former Chief of Staff and ONE Director, speaking today said, “We have chosen the ‘Fuchsia’ as our emblem, because it is for many of us a reminder of home, when seen overseas.  In the West of Ireland the Fuchsia is also known as ‘Deora De’ or ‘Gods Tears’.  We ask people to assist us with this fundraising venture – as despite the wonderful service and special retirement most of us enjoy – some of our comrades have fallen on hard times - and we want to assist them”.

ONE currently runs three homes for homeless soldiers in Dublin, Letterkenny, and Athlone.  We also have plans in place to take over the running of a facility in Limerick.

ONE spends €600,000 annually to run these homes for former soldiers.  Most of the funding is raised by various events such as raffles and church gate collections.  The Fuchsia fundraising initiative involves the sale of a badge with the word ‘Cuimhnimis’, ‘we remember’ stamped on it, - in remembrance of those who have served, those who have given their lives in service of country and peace - and especially for those who are now experiencing difficulties.

ONE would also like to be in a position to offer some assistance to former members who have accommodation, but live in difficult circumstances – for a variety of reasons.  The ‘Fuchsia’ initiative is also designed to provide assistance in this area.
